👨‍🏫 Teach students how to set goals and self-reflect on their learning process and performance

This is a very fun class!  Students make friends while learning a new language. Students will learn various ways to maximize their memory, interest, and interpretive skills.

In each unit students will learn silly short stories as a context for necessary words and structures. Also, embedded in each unit is practice interpreting and comprehending real Spanish content like commercials, signs, and appropriate songs. Students will be able to approach people in a helpful way as they learn about cultural norms and practices.

Grammar:

We stress communication rather than accuracy. We teach grammar within a context and through repetition. The teacher gives focused feedback on structural accuracy when the student is ready.

High School Learning Goals:

This class includes instruction and practice in all required learning standards for high school level 1 Spanish. Students will work on 4 language modalities of reading, writing, speaking, and listening as well as cultural learning. Students will utilize Can Do statements for each unit that will help them set goals and see their learning growth.

Expectations of Learners:

Students will have two classes per week and 45-60 minutes of homework twice a week.

This class is a very interactive and communicative class! Students will act out words and phrases and will add details to our fun short stories. They also will interact with both their peers and teachers regularly. It’s essential that students have their cameras on and ready for fun Spanish interaction.

Homework is very important when learning a language. Repetition is crucial for the brain. The students can play with the learning in their brains before the next class session. Students also read three short novels over the course of the class.

Grades:

The instructor will give specific and authentic feedback to the student. This includes feedback verbally in class and with the chat box and on homework submissions. All students will receive formal grades. The teacher will utilize clear rubrics that support communication of learning expectations and student performance to learners and parents.

All Lemons-Aid Courses:

Our mission is to equip learners’ minds and shepherd their hearts. We want them to have saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and then develop a biblical worldview. This means they view their world, themselves, and God in a way that aligns with what the Bible teaches. This brings great peace and understanding to the believer because we serve a good, sovereign God. This course is taught with these goals in mind. In class, we may pray, read scripture, and discuss how to view the content from a Christian perspective.

We have adopted The Master’s Seminary Doctrinal Statement.

Lemon’s Aid Language Learning

Learning Purpose

Nelson Mandela once said, “If you speak to a man in a language he understands, you speak to his head. If you speak to him in his language, you speak to his heart.” The purpose of learning a language is to communicate, which means knowing vocabulary, phrases, and verbal and non-verbal cues to meet needs and share ideas with those who speak the language. There are many benefits to learning a second language, such as increasing memory and attention span, opening more career options, and even improving cognition in the later years of life. While these reasons matter, at Lemons-Aid, our top focus in learning a language is to meet the Great Commission as stated in Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV),

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” The ability to speak two or more languages widens the ministry field and helps create better connections and meaning for people.

Learning Method

At Lemons-Aid, we understand the challenges of learning a new language, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. We utilize brain-friendly methods that focus on communication and engagement in the target culture. We teach using two main methods.

  1. Comprehensible input. An American linguist, Dr. Stephan Krashen, first introduced this method in which teachers supply input so that students can understand most of the targeted language. As Krashen argues, using comprehensible input encourages learners to understand, interpret, and use natural brain learning techniques and is one of the most essential factors in learning another language. Content is created specifically for the language learner in mind. Structures and grammar are embedded and practiced naturally. An example of comprehensible input in our curriculum comes from short stories that incorporate and repeat high-frequency vocabulary and phrases.
  2. Authentic Language Acquisition. This learning method utilizes real-world examples of language from meaningful and real situations. Authentic materials include content from commercials, podcasts, and songs that are part of the target culture and language. This content is not created for second-language learners, forcing students to make cognitive associations. It is shown to improve language retention, improve student motivation with engaging content, and provide cultural awareness in real-life situations. Examples of authentic language content in our curriculum are church songs and short vlogs.
