Description

 Theme:

As adults we take reading for granted. One day, back when we were smaller, reading just clicked. Most of us don’t remember the process that it took for us to learn reading. As we work with our little learners, we start to notice how much work it took to get us to that “AHA” moment in our own reading journey. Students learn reading when they are taught how words are created through the foundational skill of phonics. We approach words as mysteries to be solved and take on the roles of detectives to crack the code of reading. This is an ongoing class that focuses on teaching pre-reading skills such as sounds, blending, and syllables.

Pre-Requisites:

There are no pre-requisites for this class. This is a beginner level course focused on letter sounds, sound blending, and creating words.

General Learning Goals:

Students learn reading by learning how to create words using letter sounds. Starting with basic letter identification and sound knowledge, students will learn how to build words by blending sounds together.

This class is intended to help students with essential skills to crack the code of reading. It’s a short boost of intentional instruction and guidance from an experienced and certified teacher that will help learners read. We also provide parents with guidance and materials they can use between classes as they spend precious time with their young children.

In class, we will focus on phonics, rhyming, and other skills that bolster early literacy skills, reading readiness, decoding skills, and fluency. We work to get students reading!

Class format:

3 minutes – Greetings
5 minutes – Introduction of essential skills to learn reading with teacher modeling (this varies by week but will include phonemic awareness, decoding/phonics, fluency, vocabulary, etc.)
15 minutes – Students practice while the teacher guides and corrects, all through fun!
2 minutes – Goodbyes

Resources and Homework:

We will give materials in each class as another way we try to support families and equip learners. We will also provide resources each week for families to use. These packets are helpful in helping parents understand how to prepare early learners for reading.

CLASS SCHEDULE:

Each week, we practice the same early literacy skills to learn reading with new material; therefore, students can jump in and out as their schedule allows. The classes do not build on one another; instead, they are cyclical as this is a skills-based course.

Weekly Skill Focus:

1: ABC chart, letter sounds, isolating beginning and middle sounds in words, blending sounds into three letter words.
2: ABC chart, letter sounds, isolating beginning and middle sounds in words, blending sounds into three letter words.

The Lemons-Aid Way: Our Approach to Teaching and Learning is Explicit!

Explicit teaching is a method of instruction students desperately need! It is the opposite of a constructivist philosophy whereby students try to construct meaning themselves.

Well…

Instead of leaving students to magically figure out how to write an essay or read or do a geometry proof, we teach explicitly, which is backed by a large body of evidence, and it’s how Mrs. Lemons teaches her undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates in college to teach! We do it this way because it’s how kids learn.

Explicit instruction is “a structured, systematic, and effective methodology for teaching academic skills. It is called explicit because it is an unambiguous and direct approach to teaching that includes both instructional design and delivery procedures. Explicit instruction is characterized by a series of supports or scaffolds, whereby students are guided through the learning process with clear statements about the purpose and rationale for learning the new skill, clear explanations and demonstrations of the instructional target, and supported practice with feedback until independent mastery has been achieved.”
-Explicit Instruction: Effective and Efficient Teaching by Anita L. Archer and Charles A. Hughes.

Anita Archer trained Mrs. Lemons in workshops, and it changed her teaching. Read a little more about the research behind explicit teaching here and here.
